You would think that the area surrounding the Richat Structure is so barren and hostile that no one ever goes there. Right? Not quite. People visit this ancient artifact, despite it residing in the middle of featureless Maur Adrar desert, in Africa's Western Sahara.
The structure is accessible from Oudane by land rover or sports utility vehicle. There is also a hotel smack in the middle of the Richat Structure. It's nothing luxurious, but offers adequate accommodations to tired tourists and "Mad Max" kind of explorers.
The surrounding area 'guelb' houses F'Derik iron mines, among the largest in Africa. Located at an approximate distance of 100 miles southeast of Richat Structure, it is an immense source of iron ore. The ore mined here in Choum is transported to Nouadhibou port on the Atlantic coast which is about 420 miles away. This is the longest non-stop railroad distance in the world. The trains carrying ores are often three thousand metres long. No passengers are allowed to travel on this train.
